Hello there, that’s one cute wild life photo and I love wolves & foxes, so I’d be happily giving some thoughts on this.

When I first saw this photo I can’t help smiling, looking at the animal’s innocence and carefree attitude which is very relaxing. But when you look at it again, it’s actually photo of a fox sleeping under a tree but curiously not beneath the shadow, it’s more like sunbathing instead. Either way, I think the main theme is the same: the innocent sense of peace.

The photo itself has a good sharp level, I love to see the clean fox’s soft fur. And I like the accent of small strands of pine tree above it. But aside from these factors, I think there’s not much anymore to see in the photograph.

First I want to point out the colors in general. There’s only fox’s orange and white, and then the dark brown earth surrounding it which is spread evenly/monotonously. Having limited colors in your photo object is actually not really a fault because I’ve seen some excellent photography works that have managed to reach a high artistic value that way, but I have to say this is not one of them, sorry. It’s more like a candid photo when you happen to be lucky finding a fox around.

But I think I can see you still considering the point of view of where the fox would be positioned in the image area, and I’d say this angle is nice enough. Talking about lighting, I think there’s not much of interesting shadow play that worth paid attention to, it’s all still ordinary. So overall the picture is somewhat flat.

In my opinion if you want to judge the artistic value of your photograph is, try to imagine it hanging in a wall, framed or not doesn’t matter. Is it interesting enough as a wall decoration? Is there something extra in the photo that somewhat ‘moves’ you? I think honestly despite the cute subject, the answer for this photo is still a ‘no’.

I’ve seen your other wild life photos and I think they are still more like just a little above average amateur photo works (I’m more of an amateur than you though ) with average/generic result, mostly lack of depth, although the subjects are amazing and your decisions on the points of view are actually very good in some cases. But then it may take more than just an ordinary camera (yeah pro cameras are expensive T_T) to create a good photography work and high photo retouching skill so I think for a pure photography you’ve done them quite nicely.

Now for an improvement suggestion, you might want to take this fox photo from another view point in a way that the background would contain more variety of colors or shapes, although the lack of variation is not really a limit if you can think creatively of another unique angle because photography is not real life, it’s more of an art. Overall this is a photo with a promising object of interest with a heart-felt impact but could use more improvement in depth (play with focus) and colors. Keep on photographing.
